Valentine’s Day brings to most Americans happy images of candy and pink hearts. But to others, February 14 brings sadness. To few has it brought more heartache than to Theodore Roosevelt, who lost both his wife and his mother on Valentine’s Day in 1884. Among the most poignant, and certainly the most tragic, is the story of Theodore Roosevelt’s Valentine’s Day in 1884. Just twenty-five, he lost both his wife and mother on the same day, to unrelated causes. On Friday, February 14, 2025, a ceremony will take place at Hull Paragon Station to unveil a memorial to the rail crash that happened 98 years ago to the day, just outside the station, and cost Valentine’s Days were unusually eventful for Theodore Roosevelt and family, as this date marked some of the happiest and darkest periods in their lives. On February 14 th of 1880, the 21-year-old future president publicly announced his engagement to Alice Hathaway Lee. On Friday, February 14, 2025, a ceremony will take place at Hull Paragon Station to unveil a memorial to the rail crash that happened 98 years ago to the day, just outside the station, and cost the lives of 12 passengers, most of whom were from Withernsea. On February 14, 1884, Roosevelt etched a heavy black X in his diary and wrote “The light has gone out of my life.” He refused ever to mention Alice again. Roosevelt’s profound personal tragedy turned out to have national significance. To few has it brought more heartache than to Theodore Roosevelt, whose wife and mother died within hours of one another on February 14, 1884. Just four years earlier, February 14 was one of the happiest days of his life. On that day in 1880, Roosevelt announced his engagement to Alice Hathaway Lee. We have an event planned for Green-Wood this Saturday, commemorating the Valentine’s Day of 1884, when, tragically, both Theodore Roosevelt’s wife, Alice (pictured above, with Theodore as a young man), and mother, Martha (shown here), died of disease.
