In the Roman Rite, February 14 is no longer the feast of St. Valentine, even though popular culture celebrates Valentine's Day. February 14 has become one of the strangest days in Western Catholics used to celebrate the feast day of St. Valentine on February 14. He is after all the patron saint of lovers. It is thanks to him that the whole world now celebrates Valentine’s Day. Our Valentine celebration encompasses three decades filled with blessings that have transformed our home into a domestic church. Priests, religious and chaste singles can evangelize through their witness that love still abounds even if it doesn’t fit the greeting-card mold. Saturday will mark Valentine's Day, but it isn't St. Valentine's Day anymore. The Catholic Church dropped St. Valentine from its calendar as of the second Vatican council, commonly called Catholic traditions on Valentine’s Day may include beginning the day with a morning Mass, a special church service, where church goers reflect on the theme of love and thank God for the people they care about. Conjugal love, as the Church teaches, is meant to be open to life and ordered toward the good of both spouses. It is a love that reflects Christ’s sacrificial love for His Church. So, as we celebrate St. Valentine’s Day, let us remember that love is not just about romantic gestures or fleeting emotions. Rather than a day of escapism, Christians should approach Valentine’s day differently. I offer that the Christian approach is to spend all our strength pursuing worthwhile actions in support of our loved ones. If this is done well, we will no doubt be blessed with healthy and vibrant relationships. Although exchanging sweets, flowers, gifts, and cards with loved ones is a fun and time-honored tradition, Feb. 14 should be a reminder for Catholics to reflect deeper on the legacy of St. Valentine, according to the Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land and other religious sources. St. Valentine’s feast day was a victim of a purge of saints feast days from the Church’s calendar following the Second Vatican Council. The reason cited for this move is often given as that some saints lacked the necessary historical provenance to justify their commemoration. Celebrating Valentine’s Day is for the birds. Or maybe, it would be better to say that celebrating Valentine’s Day is from the birds.. Legend says that one of these men, Saint Valentine of Terni, had officiated weddings for Roman soldiers in secret, going against the emperor's wishes, making him seen to some as a proponent of love. Many people don’t even realize that St. Valentine’s day is a Catholic feast day. Somehow, that “Saint” gets dropped off of the day most of the time.
