And sometimes the Valentine’s Day pair would marry. In the Dutch colonies in the1600s and early 1700s, it was widely held that on the morning of Saint Valentine’s Day, the first man a woman would set eyes on, or vice versa, should be that gentleman’s or lady’s intend-ed, and accompany her throughout the day. Valentine's Day was named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine which was established by Pope Gelasius in 496 AD. There were three saints named Valentine or Valentinus that the Catholic Church recognized whom were martyred. One story claims Valentine was a priest living in Rome during the 3rd Century. I was almost sure that Valentine’s Day was a commercialized rip off of the exploits of the valiant St. Valentine, who was killed because he married people when marriage was outlawed. I just assumed the holiday was puffed up in the 1920s,1940s, or 1950s into the card and candy creation we celebrate today. Chocolate gifting became a Valentine’s Day staple thanks to Richard Cadbury’s invention of the heart-shaped chocolate box in the 1800s. Today, chocolates are one of the top gifts exchanged on Valentine’s Day, with everything from fancy truffles to giant chocolate bars making their way into hearts and hands. Some of the ways the Colonial Americans celebrated St. Valentine’s Day were downright peculiar to our modern sensibilities.
