St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, mass murder of a group of unarmed bootlegging gang members in Chicago on February 14, 1929. The bloody incident dramatized the intense rivalry for control of the illegal liquor traffic during the Prohibition era in the United States. Yet hundreds of years ago Valentine’s Day saw a horrific mass murder when 2,000 Jews were burned alive in the French city of Strasbourg. The year was 1349 and the Bubonic Plague, known as the Black Death, was sweeping across Europe, wiping out whole communities. The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre was the murder of seven members and associates of Chicago's North Side Gang on Saint Valentine's Day 1929. The men were gathered at a Lincoln Park, Chicago, garage on the morning of February 14, 1929. Chicago’s gang war reached its bloody climax in the so-called St. Valentine’s Day Massacre of 1929. One of Capone’s longtime enemies, the Irish gangster George “Bugs” Moran, ran his bootlegging On February 14th, Valentine was publicly beaten with clubs, then beheaded, becoming a martyr for love. Seven men from Chicago's North Side Gang, headed by George Clarence "Bugs" Moran, were murdered by Thompson submachine guns in a warehouse on Valentine's Day, 1929. It was painfully cold on Valentine’s Day morning at 2212 N. Clark St. Seven members of the North Side Gang had arrived early to broker a deal with Detroit’s Purple Gang for cheap whiskey. The massacre not only made Al Capone a national celebrity, but it also brought Capone, the unwanted attention of the federal government.
