Valentine’s Day traces its origins back to the Feast of Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr who lived during the Roman Empire in the 3rd century AD. When the Queen Mary Psalter was made, in the early 14th century, there was probably little or no association between Saint Valentine and love. So why is 14th February considered a day for romance? Who was Saint Valentine? A Medieval Valentine’s Message A letter from the teenager Margery Brews to her suitor John Paston contains the oldest surviving Valentine greeting in English. It is an extraordinary window on love and marriage in the late Middle Ages. Though most of the examples we have come from aristocratic culture, the marriage cases from late medieval London show that more ordinary people also embraced Valentine’s Day. A popular European folk belief during medieval times, was that February 14th was the day on which all birds chose their mates for the year. However, romance – and attempts to encourage romantic behaviour – was not solely the preserve of St Valentine’s Day alone. On February 14, when we share chocolates, special dinners or doily cards with our loved ones, we do it in the name of Saint Valentine. But who was this saint of romance?
