Still Valentine's Day 1969 is a live album by American folk guitarist Sandy Bull, released in 2006 through Water Records. In the 70s/80s, multi-hyphenate folk picker Sandy Bull was mostly off the scene, but this 1976 concert demonstrates that the "Blends" of his heyday still held great power. Sandy recovered from years of personal problems in the late 1980s, releasing several albums before passing away in 2001. Listening to Sandy Bull you felt like he never truly knew where his music would take him (and us as listeners), or did he? But one thing I do know--this is an exciting set of improvisational music from a one-of-a-kind musician. Recorded over two nights at The Matrix club in San Francisco, the songs here find Bull exploring a reverberating electric vision that exemplifies his earned legend. Although Bull was experiencing some equipment issues on the nights that shape Still Valentine’s Day 1969, noting to the audience that his gear had been stolen and the Black Widow guitar he was playing was new to him, this reality lessens the impact of the two sets hardly at all. Nowhere is Bull’s stage prowess on better display than Still Valentine’s Day 1969, one of scant live recordings of Bull in full flight, finally available on vinyl from No Quarter almost 20 years after it was first unearthed. "Still Valentine's Day 1969" is comprised of two live shows recorded at The Matrix in San Francisco in 1969 with Bull playing shimmering electric guitar and oud, accompanied by tape loop.
