Valentine’s Day, like many other holidays, can be especially hard for widows. When we’ve lost the love of our life, it can be another harsh reminder of that loss. Many of our church partners do Valentine’s lunches and dinners and take on the important role of letting widows know that they are seen and not forgotten on this day. Valentine’s Day is no exception. Alone time is good, but if you are withdrawing from the people that support you, Valentine’s Day is just as good a time as any to reach back out. Valentine’s Day can be a challenge for all who’ve lost a loved one, but it can be especially difficult for widows. This day which has always been spent in a certain way, with a particular someone is now particularly different. It amplifies the fact that their special someone is not there. However, you can help a widow through Valentine’s Day. Like the time your husband made your Valentine’s card out of a paper airplane and “flew” it to you. Or the time he wrote you a poem about how he wasn’t allowed to buy you flowers. Or the year he sent you a bouquet of your wedding roses. So, while I may not be able to celebrate Valentine’s Day with Jared, I have a heart full of love. Valentin’s Day can be a very emotionally charged day for widows and their children. Widowed families are often surprised by how hard Valentine’s Day can become. Empowering this time takes faith, community, and planning ahead.
