Conversation hearts, truffles galore and heart-shaped boxes of chocolates—these are the symbols of Valentine’s Day for many lovers around the world. But where did this tradition come from? In the early 1800s, the first boxes of chocolate were made specifically for Valentine's Day by a British chocolatier named Richard Cadbury. He created a heart-shaped box, which he filled with chocolates and sold as a Valentine's Day gift. Honmei choco (love chocolate) is given by women to their boyfriends, while gyaku (reverse) choco is something men give their girlfriends. (The former is more common, since March 14, aka White Day, is the day men traditionally recognize their significant others with gifts.) Cadbury didn’t trademark his heart-shaped boxes, however, and by the 1930s, other companies — including America’s Russell Stover — had followed suit.
