Valentine’s Day in Colombia, or as it should be known, Amor Y Amistad, is celebrated on the 3rd weekend of September and is approached with a similar fervor as the Colombians approach Halloween and Christmas, which is, to say the very least, wholeheartedly. Instead, Colombians have their own holiday to honor these feelings: the Day of Love and Friendship, celebrated on the third Saturday of September. Valentine's Day has its origins in ancient Rome, with the celebration of the Lupercal festivals, a pagan festival that took place in mid-February. St Valentine’s Day isn’t celebrated in February in Colombia but instead, they celebrate Day of Love and Friendship in September. In Colombia, rather than celebrating Valentine's Day on February 14th, people celebrate 'El Día del Amor y la Amistad' (Love and Friendship Day) in September. This is a day when Colombians take the time to show appreciation for their friends and loved ones, similar to Valentine's Day in other countries. During Valentine’s Day 2024, the rose was the standout export from Colombia, making up an impressive 19% of the total, with red roses being the favored choice.Other popular flowers also made their mark, including carnations at 16%, chrysanthemums at 13%, hydrangeas at 7%, and Alstroemerias at 6%. In several Latin American countries, including Colombia, Valentine’s Day is celebrated as Día de Amor y Amistad. While many countries, even in Latin America, observe Valentine’s Day on February 14—the most popular date worldwide—Colombia made a notable change. In late February we had the chance to connect with our friends in Colombia again, this time to compare Valentine’s Day traditions and celebrations. We were surprised to learn that in Colombia they don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th like we do; instead they celebrate Love and Friendship month in September. You can even make it into a "Galentine's Day" and celebrate with your best girlfriends. Valentines are for a day, friends are forever. 4. February 14: National Organ Donor Day. Yes, the 14 th may be Valentine’s Day, but let’s remember what this day is really about. If you are a legal organ donor, congratulations: this is your day! Surprisingly, though, Valentine’s Day is not officially celebrated in Colombia – instead, Día del Amor y la Amistad takes place on September 20th and is dedicated to love and friendship. Nonetheless, with the influx of tourism in Colombia and strong ties to North America, Valentine’s Day is now an honorary tradition in the country.
